KNETIC brings “Hitch” to downtown Kingsport

What do you get when you combine a great movie and Kingsport’s fastest growing organization for young professionals? A darn good time, that’s what.

Organized earlier this year, KNETIC is a social and community involvement group for young professionals. KNETIC’s organizers wanted to create opportunities for 20-somethings to 40-somethings who live or work in the Kingsport to interact socially.

“We brought together a group of like-minded individuals who wanted to create a fun, positive atmosphere for young adults in Kingsport. That way, young people may be more likely to choose to make Kingsport their homes after college,” said John Vachon, KNETIC’s president.

Corporations in Kingsport have also expressed concern over the ability to attract young professionals to the area.

“Our hope is that we can help the city’s larger employers – Eastman, Wellmont, Weyerhaeuser – to attract the best and brightest employees who may not be familiar with the area. We want to show folks that opportunities for fun and social interaction exist in the Kingsport area,” Vachon said.

So far, KNETIC has hosted two events – a fancy beer swap in a downtown loft, and the Lazy Man’s Triathlon, a barbecue featuring horseshoes, croquet and shuffleboard.

But the group’s mission isn’t just to have fun. Opportunities for members to perform community service either through volunteer work or by serving on non-profit boards and committee are also being pursued.

“The goal is to network within the community and become a new energy source from which Kingsport can benefit,” Vachon said.

KNETIC’s kickoff event, will be held Friday, Sept. 9 at 8:30 p.m,. on the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce lawn, 151 East Main St.

“Hitch,” a romantic comedy featuring Will Smith and Kevin James will be shown on a giant outdoor screen. Tents will be provided, and the movie will be shown rain or shine. Bring blankets or chairs and your beverage of choice.

Admission is $5, and will be used to fund future KNETIC events. For more information, visit www.KNETIC.org.

Subject: Harvest Fare Festival and Concert to Benefit American Red Cross

There are so many things happening at DKA that it justified an email before the weekend.

Phyllis Winegar owner of Claudette's passed away yesterday evening.  Our sympathy is extended to the family.

Cindy & David Lemons are the proud parents of a 7 lb. 1 oz. baby girl, Lauren Shaffer.  Cindy is at Indian Path Hospital for those of you that would like to drop a send a card.  Congrats!!!

Yesterday a called meeting of DKA Executive Committee and other community leaders met to decide how we might help the victims in New Orleans and the surrounding area.  It was decided that since we are having the DKA Harvest Fare September 10th & 11th that we could help with portions of the proceeds going toward the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.  During the day arts and craft vendors will be set up in Glen Bruce Park and on Board Street.  A dunking tank will be set up in Glen Bruce Park September 10th with the opportunity to come by and "dunk" City Celebrities such as Alderman Ben Mallicote, Fire Chief Craig Dye and others. Don't miss this opportunity. Festival food vendors will be found along with DKA board members frying hamburgers.

Saturday evening will be the Sam Bush Concert with Appalachian Trail. Tickets are $10.00 in advance and $12.00 at the gate.  Corporate Sponsor tents are available at $500.00.  This will include 1 table, 10 chairs, 10 tickets and a food tray with promotional advertisement.

Watch for more information in the Kingsport Times News and tune your radios to WTFM-98.5.  For more information, please call the DKA office 246-6550 or Denise Freeman, Chairman of Harvest Fare, 378-5848.

Location, Location, Location

Location, Location, Location
www.MoveToKingsport.com is located on the Tennessee-Virginia border at the crossroads of I-81 and I-26 near the geographic center of the Eastern U.S. This city of 50,000 in a metro of 308,000, was planned by renowned American planner John Nolen in his office at Harvard Square. Located in the lush green foothills of the Tennessee Valley, it is surrounded by the Southern Highlands and mountain lakes. Kingsport is home to Marriott’s www.MeadowViewResort.com and thousands of acres of unique, natural amenities at Bays Mountain and Warriors Path Parks. The natural geography provides a temperate, well-balanced climate with four seasons and a natural shelter from extreme weather. Population growth has also been well-balanced, ensuring you will not outgrow your decision to relocate. With no personal property taxes, special assessments, or state income taxes on salaries/wages, you’ll find that Kingsport has a very low cost of living coupled with an exceptionally high quality of life (see for yourself at www.BestPlaces.net). The regional airport (TRI) has direct flights to Atlanta, Charlotte, Orlando and St. Pete/Clearwater with easy access, parking, and virtually no security lines. The public education system was planned by Columbia University and Newsweek has repeatedly recognized the local high school as one of the best in America. Year in and year out our graduates go on to the top colleges and universities (and without costly private school tuition fees). Harvard also recognized Kingsport in 2009 with the Innovations in American Government Award for its higher education initiative. What are you waiting for? It’s time to leave the high costs, traffic jams, and stress behind and discover this hidden gem.
