KINGSPORT – The American Music Conference has named Kingsport City Schools as one of the “Best 100 Communities For Music Education” for the second year in a row.
The award is based on the quality of Kingsport City School’s music education program, diverse course offerings, student participation rates, and community support.
Kingsport City Schools is the only school district in Tennessee to receive the award. The 2005 roster includes school districts from 34 different states whose commitment to quality music education—measured across a variety of economic, curricular and programmatic criteria—has enabled them to stand out despite the many pressures on music programs across the country. Kingsport City Schools Community Relations Coordinator Amy Greear said the school system applied for the award in February through a multi-page survey. The survey included questions concerning music education course offerings, music opportunities in and out of school, facilities and equipment related to music education, and community support for music programs.
Kingsport City Schools offers courses in concert and marching band, jazz ensemble, electronic music, orchestra, choral and chamber choirs. Music education is a required curriculum component in the elementary and middle school grade levels. Approximately 25 percent of high school students also participate in an elective music education course.
Kingsport City Schools also dedicates between 2 percent and 5 percent of its budget to music instruction, including teacher salaries, equipment, and extracurricular programs. The schools’ individual Booster Club organizations also contribute considerable funds to upgrading those programs, offering individual music tutoring scholarships for students, and paying for additional instructional aides for school music programs. In addition, the school system is embarking on construction of a $1.8 million band and orchestra building that will be located on the campus of Dobyns-Bennett High School. This project should be completed by the 2006-2007 school year.
“We are extremely pleased to have received the award for a second year,’’ said Kingsport City Schools Superintendent Richard Kitzmiller. “Our school system is fortunate to have many highly qualified music educators and tremendous community support which enable our students to achieve in the fine arts.”
This is the sixth year that the American Music Conference has offered the award program, designed to recognize school districts whose commitment to quality music education can be measured across a variety of economic, curricular and program criteria. The unveiling of the survey results is part of National “Music In Our Schools” month.

Kingsport's Wireless E-911 Solution
KINGSPORT, TN – The City of Kingsport Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division was recently recognized during the Tennessee Geographic Information Council’s annual conference in Nashville.
GIS uses information technology to link local databases to mapping solutions.
Kingsport GIS Analyst Chris Campbell presented "Kingsport's Wireless E-911 Solution".
E-911 allows emergency dispatchers to identify the geographic origin of a call so help can be sent – regardless of the caller’s ability to speak, describe or identify their location.
"Several people in the audience remarked that their organizations either had no solution at all or paid substantially more than what Kingsport did for its solution," said Campbell.
"It should be noted that significant cost savings are often realized by the GIS Division by doing work in-house instead of outsourcing," Campbell explained.
Campbell and GIS Technician Constance Eaton also received awards for First Place in "Best Data Integration" and Second Place in "Viewer's Choice".
"The conference provided us a great opportunity in a professional atmosphere to show Kingsport as a leader and as an example to be followed. I sincerely believe we achieved this," Campbell said.
Eaton is a Kingsport native and graduate of Dobyns-Bennett and Emory & Henry. Campbell is an Elizabethton native and ETSU graduate.

The Spirit Shakers were one of 55 dance teams competing at the National Dance Alliance U.S. Championship held in New York City, New York, on Saturday, March 19. The team won first in the small varsity division, and took home the overall NDA Grand Championship award.
The 11-member Spirit Shakers team is led by director Wendy Baker. Members include Courtney Wade, Holly Tumbling, Caroline Bowery, Lisa Colosimo, Jillian Francisco, Morgan Pecktol, Jenna Million, Cozette Sanders, Alisha Bragg, Katie Floyd, and Emma Clark.

Did you know that residents of Kingsport-Bristol and Johnson City are closer to 8,361,000 metro neighbors in 7 states than to their own state capitals in Nashville & Richmond?
We often get caught in the trap of analyzing only our State data; however, in many cases (like ours) the geography of population defies state boundaries. Kingsport-Bristol and Johnson City (Tri-Cities) are considerably closer (physically and demographically) to metros in VA, WV, NC, SC, KY, OH and GA than Middle or West Tennessee (see chart below).
Factoids:
Tri-Cities wasn’t the only MSA to be split by the U.S. Census in 2003. Winston-Salem, Durham, Spartanburg and Anderson, for example, are now freestanding MSA’s that were separated from Greensboro, Raleigh and Greenville, respectively.
