News Channel 11 is teaming up with Shred First and the Fort Henry Mall to provide a community service to anyone worried about identity theft. A series of News Channel 11 special reports stressed the importance of shredding your unwanted or unneeded personal documents and papers to ensure identifying information is not discarded in a manner that could allow someone to take and use those vital statistics. To make this task as easy as possible, News Channel 11 will be on hand Saturday with an industrial shredder, ready to destroy your unneeded documents.
At the Saturday event, Shred First - an industrial document shredding company - will set up their mobile shredding lab in the parking lot of Fort Henry Mall in Kingsport from 9am - 2pm and allow anyone to drop off papers and documents they want shredded -- for free. WJHL employees will be on hand to help unload the documents from vehicles and get them to the massive shredder to be destroyed... again, all for free.
Cluster Balloonist Launches First Ever Flight from Tennessee
Blountville, TN: John Ninomiya, the most experienced cluster balloonist in the world, will take on the role of Joe Frugal when he makes his only appearance in Tennessee this Saturday for Fun Fest’s Breakfast with the Balloons. Sponsored by Tri-Cities Regional Airport (TCRA), Ninomya will attach more than 100 giant helium balloons to a body harness to launch his cluster balloon.
Using 8000 cubic feet of helium, a team of 25 volunteers will work for two hours to inflate and rig the multicolored balloons in preparation for the 6:30 a.m. launch. Breakfast with the Balloons takes place at Memorial Park, across Fort Henry Dr. from Dobyns-Bennett High School. In case of rain, the launch will be delayed until 4:30 p.m.
This Harvard educated pilot has over 20 years of experience as a balloonist. Ninomiya’s 32 cluster flights have been featured in Popular Science, Reader’s Digest, ESPN Magazine and the Wall Street Journal. He has also appeared on Inside Edition, MTV, Tech TV and the History Channel.
“With half a dozen pilots worldwide, cluster ballooning remains something between an extreme sport and a personal eccentricity,” Ninomiya said at his Web site, www.clusterballoon.org. “At [the] present [time], I'm the only regularly active cluster balloonist in North America.”
According to Melissa Thomas, TCRA Director of Marketing and Airport Services, the Airport jumped at the chance to sponsor Ninomiya’s launch. “When approached with this opportunity, we thought sponsoring such a unique event would fit right in with the Airport’s recent campaign about going to extremes to fly cheap,” Thomas said. “A cluster balloon flight is definitely an extreme way to fly.”
Ninomiya is staging cluster balloon flights in each of the United States for a project he is calling “States of Enlightenment.” He plans to fly in three to five states per year for the next 10 to 15 years. The Fun Fest event will serve as Ninomiya’s Tennessee launch.
TCRA is a full-service, commercial Airport that serves as a gateway to East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, Western North Carolina and parts of Kentucky. TCRA is a growing transportation center for the region, both in passenger service and cargo. For more information contact the TCRA marketing department at 423-325-6030 or visit TRIflight.com.
