I am on the Meals on Wheels Board of Directors. We are now in critical need of volunteer drivers. We currently deliver to over 220 recipients with about 50 recipients on the waiting list. We have drivers that are dropping out due to medical issues or they are moving. We already have 50 folks waiting to be on our list, and we are now at a point where we may have to drop some of our current recipients. It is awful to think of these people not receiving the food they need. Therefore, I'm sending out a plea for help.

Basically, we have two places you can pick up food and deliver - Waverly Road Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian church (on church circle). You choose which location you want and how often you can volunteer. We recommend once a month, but of course would be thrilled if someone wanted to do it more often. On your designated day, you pick up the food around 10:30 then it takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to deliver to around 15-20 participants. It is easiest when you team up with someone. That way one person drives and the other person jumps out to deliver. Robin Minga and I have delivered meals for the Renaissance Center for about 3-4 years now. It is such a blessing. Eastman is very supportive of this effort. You just have to clear it with your immediate supervision if you see you will go a little over your lunch hour.

Anyway, I just wanted to get the word out about this need. If you have the time to help, please let me know and I will get you in touch with the right people. Also, feel free to send this on to others you feel may be interested.

Upon their retirement, how many times do you hear someone say “I think I might write a book”?  How many times do they actually follow through? 

 

Well, one of Kingsport’s most active community volunteers, David Oaks (dandb02@earthlink.net), made true on that commitment.   

 

He’s a great guy in spite of his obnoxious obsession with the University of Georgia Bulldogs – and that awful red flag he proudly flies over the otherwise unblemished landscape of Kingsport’s historic Watauga Street.  J

 

Seriously, David heads the Netherland Inn Association, which includes both the Netherland Inn itself and the Exchange Place – two of Kingsport’s most significant early historic sites.  He also serves as one of the Mayor’s stewards for the King’s Port on the Holston strategic initiative. 

 

The storyline follows an early pioneer’s migration from Colonial Virginia to “the first frontier” (what is now East Tennessee).

Kingsport Renaissance Center hosts Local Author at Book Signing

Kingsport’s Cultural Arts Division is pleased to host local author David Sherrill Oaks on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the second floor atrium of the Kingsport Renaissance Center. Oaks will be signing copies of his newly released historical novel Misty Misty Morn.

Misty Misty Morn is the story of the Adam Sherrill family of Williamsburg, Virginia as they travel west in the early 1700’s to establish their own home and raise a family. They meet with adventure, tragedy, floods, Indians and people of strange and unknown origins, who became known as Melungeons in their trek across the original old west. This old west is known today as western North Carolina and includes the lands that later became Tennessee.

David Sherrill Oaks was raised in Tuscumbia, Alabama and Athens, Georgia. He graduated from the University of Georgia. Since retirement, he has been involved in efforts to promote the history of the Appalachian region.

The book signing will coincide with the Tennesseans for the Arts reception for regional legislators also held at the Kingsport Renaissance Center. The public is welcome at both events.

The Center for Cardiovascular Health and The Health Resources Center, divisions of Mountain States Health Alliance (MSHA) will host monthly cholesterol screenings on the first Thursday of each month, beginning Sept. 1, from 8 a.m. to noon in Bristol.

The screenings will be held at the MSHA Community and Government Relations office, located at 32 Sixth St., Bristol, Tenn., adjacent to the Bristol post office.

Jeff, thank you for your continued flow of information.  Since you have such a large readership, I was wondering if you would send out information about Harvest Fare.  September 10^th and 11^th.  Set up in on Friday Evening – This is our 29^th year and we will be located at Broad and Church Circle this year.  Our hours are 9am to 5pm Saturday and noon until 5pm Sunday.  There will be a Sam Bush Concert on Main Street on Saturday September 10^th with a Mandolin Workshop (with Sam Bush) starting at 3pm and the concert to start at 6pm with Appalachian Trail and Sam Bush from 8pm to 10pm.  This year Harvest Fare entertainment will start with the Miss Harvest Fare Pageant at 10am, this will also show case Nakeisha Gillis, noon – 2pm Countrymen, 2pm – 4p, Lonesome Pine, 4 pm to 5pm TnBrook – On Sunday we will have from noon to 2pm the East Tennessee Cheer & Gymnastics competition, 2 pm to 3pm Silver Sounds, 3 pm to 4 pm Southern Revival. to host 1st Annual Fall Classic

KINGSPORT, Tenn.-The Holston Valley Futbol Club (HVFC) will host its 1st
Annual Fall Classic, Sept. 10 and 11 on the city's new soccer fields at
Eastman Park at Horse Creek and Weyerhaeuser Park.

Approximately 19 regional teams are expected to participate in this
inaugural Fall Classic. "The event will help raise funds to enhance
Kingsport's recreational soccer program as well as provide capital funds
for continued enhancements and maintenance of the newly-constructed
soccer complex," said Beth Jones, tournament coordinator.

Tournament registration will be held Fri., Sept. 9, from 6 to 10 p.m.,
at Eastman Park at Horse Creek. Tournament action begins Saturday
morning with the championship games being played on Sunday afternoon.
The age division for this tournament ranges from under 9 to under 17.
First and second place trophies will be awarded on Sunday in each age
division.

The tournament is free and open to the public. "This tournament is an
excellent opportunity for young athletes to sharpen their skills and
learn from other teams playing styles," Jones said. "It is also an
opportunity for Kingsport to welcome many people who have never been
here and showcase our region to them."

Originally formed as the Kingsport Youth Soccer Association, Holston
Valley Futbol Club has been providing soccer education and enjoyment to
the region for 30 years. HVFC runs a recreational program for children
ages four to 13 and a competitive soccer program for ages 9 and up.

KINGSPORT – Kingsport City Schools and the Kingsport Board of Education will continue to hold a series of Brown Bag Lunches to facilitate school information and discussion with parents and the community.

 

The first brown bag lunch was held Wednesday, August 17 at Kennedy Elementary School with more than 20 people in attendance. Future Brown Bag Lunches will be held each second Wednesday of the month from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. The schedule for the Brown Bag Lunches is as follows:

TRILLIUM  FLUTE  ENSEMBLE  –  SEPTEMBER  2005  CONCERT  SERIES

 

After a successful spring first concert played to a full house, Trillium Flute Ensemble announces its Fall Concert Series.  The Ensemble will perform at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Kingsport at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 18; at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 23, at First Presbyterian Church in Bristol; and in Johnson City at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 25, at First United Methodist Church.

 

The five area women who make up Trillium Flute Ensemble play a variety of flutes – from piccolo to bass flute – and music of many persuasions, portraying a wide range of style and mood. 

 

“Most of the time flutists are regimented by playing only the concert flute, with the piccolo occasionally adding variety.  Because we also use alto and bass flutes which can imitate cello, string bass and tuba, we can borrow music from other genres – wind ensembles, marching bands, orchestras, as well as choral groups,” says Shana Edwards, who plays all four types of flute. 

 

“We love exposing our audience to instruments most of them have never heard before, and we demonstrate each kind of flute as our contribution to their continuing musical education,” says Edwards.  “When we prepare a concert program, we think of the audience and, knowing that people have different preferences, include enough variety so that there is something special for everyone.  Even music students who are required by their teachers to attend our concerts give us good reviews!”

 

In addition to Shana Edwards, who teaches flute full-time at Edwards Flute Studio in  Kingsport, the group is composed of Jolly Hill, former Kingsport Symphony flutist and music librarian; Eileen Butler, mother of two, who plays piano as well as flute with the group; Emily Webb, who is an office manager for a local physical and speech therapy provider and plays flute professionally; and Flour Fancies Bakery owner Charlotte Ellis. 

 

Trillium Flute Ensemble is available to play for weddings, parties, and special occasions.  They perform in numerous venues locally, including Paramount Theater’s Tunes at Noon summer concert series, and are featured at special events at Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, where they will play at the Winery Welcome Center the evening of December 16.

Jeff, your community calendars are wonderful, and I appreciate being a part of your e-list.

The Flower Festival at First Broad St. United Methodist Church on the historic Church Circle in Kingsport is coming up September 15,16, and 17. It is a community event involving volunteers from many churches. We have attendees from southwest Virginia as well as eastern Tennessee.

The Flower Festival includes scriptural interpretations through floral displays with musical accompaniment. There is a worship service at 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 15, and ths service and all of the displays are free and open to the public. There are workshops by Randy Ouzts, a floral designer from Charlotte, on Friday, September 16 for which there is a fee and reservations are required. Randy Ouzts, Acclaimed Floral Designer, at Festival of Flowers

Kingsport, Tennessee - A Festival of Flowers will be hosted by First Broad Street United Methodist Church on September 15, 16, and 17. On September 16, two presentations by Randy Ouzts, nationally recognized floral and garden designer, will be held.

Mr. Ouzts is known for his al fresco style of entertaining. He is widely recognized for his work designing and coordinating gala events. Some of the most noteworthy functions he has designed include the Millennium 2000 New Year’s Eve event in Nassau and the Swan House Ball in Atlanta that was featured in Southern Accents magazine. In the 2005 June/July issue of Garden Décor magazine, Ouzts were featured for a designer profile article. Ouzts’ work has also been featured in such national publications as Architectural Digest, Veranda, Country Home and Traditional Home magazines.

The morning session will begin at 9:30 a.m. and focus on floral design and arrangement for every occasion. Mr. Ouzts will share professional secrets used to design magnificent floral creations. The program will include tips on varied arrangements from large to small. Cost for this session is $20, and reservations are required.

The afternoon session will begin at 1:00 p.m. and focus on creativity with containers. Mr. Ouzts will demonstrate a variety of styles and techniques that can easily be recreated at home. This session will feature Randy’s own designs of innovative floral containers. Cost for this session is $20, and reservations are required.

Lunch is available between these sessions. Cost for lunch is $15, and reservations are required. The luncheon will be held in the Fellowship Hall of First Presbyterian Church, which is adjacent to First Broad Street United Methodist Church. The cost to attend all three events is $50.

Other activities, which are open to the public and have free admission, include the following:

*An Evensong Service entitled ‘Creation – From the Old Testament to the New Testament and Beyond’ will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 15 in the flower-filled Sanctuary of First Broad Street United Methodist Church.

*A Floral Display throughout First Broad Street United Methodist Church will be open Thursday, September 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
