Witnessing the life of Christ

New photography exhibit shows Christ in a whole new light

What if you could have been there the night of Christ's birth? Or the day of his baptism? What would it have been like to sit at his feet while he taught the people — the sinners, the children, the apostles? What would the sky have looked like over Gethsemane?

Photographer Mark Mabry’s exhibit, Reflections of Christ, is a unique witness of the Lord Jesus Christ through the stunning realism of photography. (See a slide show preview at ReflectionsofChrist.org).

Mabry’s 26 images of New Testament-era scenes from the life of Christ, including the Nativity, his miracles, and his death and resurrection, will make people feel like they are personally witnessing the Savior’s most awe-inspiring moments.Reflections of Christ is fast-becoming internationally known to people of many Christian faiths. The 31-year-old photographer first displayed an exhibit of the photos in Mesa, Ariz. last January and it was an immediate hit. More than 100,000 people saw it there, and more than 1.3 million from around the world have clicked online to see Mabry’s images.That led to a North American tour, a coffee table book of the images, a making-of DVD and a CD of the music that plays in the exhibit. Community Invited to Participate in Art Project at Kingsport Center for Higher Education

KINGSPORT, TN - The Kingsport Public Art Committee is pleased to announce the award of the Kingsport Higher Education Center Community Art Project to Patti Lawrence. In December 2008 a Request for Proposals for art projects in conjunction with the Kingsport Center for Higher Education was released to the community. Public Art Projects are funded by the City of Kingsport’s Percent for Art Program that allocates three quarters of one percent of the construction budget for the acquisition, installation and maintenance of art for public places. Additionally, the First Tennessee Foundation provided a $10,000 grant to the Kingsport Public Art Committee for this community art project which allows the artist to work with schools and with the community in building the mobile.

Patti Lawrence, the owner of The Gallery of Local Artists located at 158 Broad Street, holds a BFA from School of Visual Arts, New York, NY and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Montclair State University in Upper Montclair, NJ. Since 1990 she has been an active teacher/instructor in the arts having worked with the Knoxville Museum of Art, Oak Ridge Children’s Museum, and Hands On! Museum in Johnson City. 2007 she opened her own gallery on Broad Street with business hours 11- 2 PM Tuesday through Saturday and by appointment.

Lawrence’s proposal won praise from the Kingsport Higher Education Center selection committee. Chairman Mary Banks said, “We loved Patti’s concept right away. She caught the essence of the community art project and incorporated environmentally friendly and sustainable elements in the proposed construction.” Others serving on the selection committee for the Kingsport Higher Education Center included Jeff Fleming, David Mason, Chris Campbell and the architect Li Wang.

According to Lawrence’s proposal, “I have come up with a wonderful idea for the Higher Education Center Community Art Project. When completed, a dazzling, colorful mobile of swirling translucent birds will inhabit the atrium of the building, reflecting jewel tones of light throughout the space and transforming it into a magical aviary.” Lawrence will create the birds from recycled plastic containers which is in-keeping with the building’s environmentally advanced LEED certification. Lawrence will suspend the birds as a mobile in the 3-story atrium. Lawrence explains, “The old adage, ‘Birds of a feather…’ comes to mind, and yet we see in the mobile that different birds can ‘flock together’ in a cohesive community, each individual being beautiful on its own, yet becoming more important as part of the whole. The symbolism of the birds as us combines Kingsport’s history as a bird sanctuary and its present and future as a place that many have migrated to from other parts of the country and the world.”

Lawrence has already conducted one teacher in-service training session for art teachers of the Kingsport City School system. She is also available to visit with any school in Sullivan County to explain her project at the Kingsport Higher Education Center and work with art teachers on a similar project. In addition she has a variety of lesson-plans that educators can use to allow students to participate with “Birds of a Feather”. Lawrence has set two workshops that are free to the public for anyone in the community to participate in ‘bird building’. On Saturday, October 17 and November 14, from 11 AM to 2 PM, the public is invited to learn more about the mobile and to assist with the building of a bird. Targeted installation for the ‘Bird of a Feather’ mobile is April 2010. Community efforts will also be documented and celebrated at that time at the Kingsport Higher Education Center.

KINGSPORT – Kingsport City Schools is offering staff, parents and students the opportunity to express their preferences for the 2010-2011 school calendar through an online survey.

The survey allows parents, staff and students the opportunity to submit input regarding the start of school, length of fall break and other issues related to the school year. Additional questions have been added this year to gauge interest in alternative school calendars, including non-traditional calendars, extended school days and a lengthened school year.

The Kingsport Board of Education will consider the results of the survey during their November 19,2009 work session. The Board is expected to make a decision on the final school calendar during their December 3, 2009 school board meeting. Survey results will be collected until Friday, November 13. A computer will be made available at each school for parents to fill out the survey if they do not have access to a home computer.

AARP TN President Receives Regional `Outstanding Volunteer’ Award

Margot Seay Lauded by Area Agencies on Aging for Long-Term Care Work

AARP Tennessee State President Margot Seay (of Kingsport), who has spent more than a decade advocating for improvements in long-term care services, was presented Monday with an award recognizing her as the 2009 ``Outstanding Volunteer in Aging’’ by the eight-state Southeastern Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

``There were so many excellent candidates, but Margot’s nomination was moved to the top of the list almost immediately,’’ said Knoxville’s Aaron Bradley, president of the Tennessee Association of Area Agencies on Aging and a member of the regional association’s awards committee. ``She is the epitome of volunteerism in this field of work. What she is doing in her community and across the state is having a tremendous impact on people’s lives.’’

Seay’s work on landmark legislation restructuring the state’s long-term care system has even been recognized by Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, who invited Margot on a six-city tour last year to celebrate passage of the Long-Term Care Community Choices Act.

``"This is a well-deserved honor and I offer my congratulations to Margot," said the governor. "She works tirelessly for Tennessee's senior citizens with great energy and enthusiasm, and as State President of AARP, made an invaluable contribution to the state's efforts to expand long-term care options."

Seay, who lives in Kingsport, Tenn., was appointed to AARP’s highest-ranking volunteer position in January 2007. Margot was employed as the Recruiter/Coordinator of Volunteers for the First Tennessee District Ombudsman Program from 1996-2002. It was through her work in the Ombudsman Program, plus caring for her aging mother, that she became interested in expanding available long-term care choices in Tennessee.

Seay, who was presented with the award during a luncheon in Charleston, S.C., said she was honored. ``I can’t tell you how much I appreciate and admire the work that the area agencies do. They led the way for changing our long-term care system and I look forward to working with them on the implementation of the Choices program,’’ she said.

The Southeastern Association of Area Agencies on Aging, which represents Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama and Kentucky, was created as an advocacy association in 1974 and served as the prototype for the national association. D-B's Lafe Cook's family featured on PBS National Park series

Recently, I was watching the PBS series on National Parks. The episode focused on Mt. McKinley's transformation into Denali and the longtime National Park leader who successfully closed the politically sensitive deal. That leader was John Cook. After his work at Denali, he was transferred to Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.

I remembered one time that D-B's band director, Lafe Cook, said he moved to Tennessee with his family as part of the National Park Service. So, I asked and Lafe confirmed that it was in fact his family. (He also granted permission for me to share this information).

Four generations of the Cook family: John Edwin Cook, John Oliver Cook, John E. Cook and John Lafeyette "Lafe" Cook (Dobyns-Bennett Band Director). Lafe's sister Kayci Cook Collins is the 4th generation of Cooks to joing the National Park Service.

Lafe's mom's side (the Guillett's) were also park superintendents. He was the only one not to join - and the Park Service's loss is Kingsport's gain!

Hi, Jeff. As you know, Holiday Market is our only fundraiser each year and all funds raised through the Market are used to enhance the lives of women and children in the Kingsport area.

One of our project focus areas this year is feeding the hungry. We are feeding kids on weekends throughout the school year in several Sullivan County elementary schools through our Feed the Kids Backpack Project. These kids have been identified by school personnel. We also are partnering with Kingsport City Schools homeless education program to provide food for several efforts they have planned. And, we will host our annual Junior League Food Drive in conjunction with the Bristol and Johnson City Leagues this spring for Second Harvest Food Bank. We have hosted the food drive for 25+ consecutive years, and it is consistently the largest drive Second Harvest has and serves to provide food for many families whose kids are on free lunch during the school year but have no breakfasts/lunches provided during the summer.

JLK has several other projects planned for the year that are not food related, but in this challenging economy food issues are great for the many working poor who, though they work a full-time job (sometimes more than one job), there's just not enough money to provide for their families. They have to make difficult decisions each month about whether to pay the rent or buy groceries/medicine for their kids. I hope that you will be able to help us promote Holiday Market. If you have space on your blog, would you mind to share the following information with the community? Many Kingsport businesses are sponsoring this event, including MeadowView Conference Resort and Convention Center, Absolute Communications, DJ Express, and Charter Media. I am not personally involved in this event, but have several good friends who have worked very hard to develop this one of kind event in our area. There are several women's and bridal expos held annually, but nothing targeted just to the teen and college aged young women in our region. Thanks!

Wellmont seeks community votes in online contest for Children's Miracle Network

KINGSPORT – Wellmont Health System is asking for the community’s help to win a game room makeover from Xbox 360 being given to three hospitals in the Children’s Miracle Network.
Game Room Giveaway presented by Microsoft’s Xbox is an online contest, and children who receive treatment at the hospitals of Wellmont Health System are the potential winners. Wellmont is the regional affiliate for the Children’s Miracle Network, and donations received from Children’s Miracle Network help provide medical equipment, services and treatment for children at Wellmont hospitals.

Xbox is asking for America’s vote to determine the three Children’s Miracle Network hospitals that will receive a game room makeover as determined by online voting at www.xbox.childrensmiraclenetwork.org. The game room makeover for each winning hospital is valued at $10,000.

Each person is allowed 10 votes a day – so all it takes is 10 clicks of a computer mouse. Votes will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 16.

“In order to win, we must be in the top three hospitals,” said Todd Norris, executive director of Wellmont Foundation. “If community members will cast 10 votes today for Wellmont in the Children’s Miracle Network Game Room Giveaway, we can help bring a game room makeover to our hospitals. We have the power to make a real difference for the children we care for in our hospitals – but it will take votes from people throughout our community.”

Every time an individual votes for a hospital, he or she is also entered to win one of five Xbox 360 Elite consoles.

Kingsport Schools make Top 10 list for lowest rate of energy use per student in Tennessee

KINGSPORT – Kingsport City Schools has been placed among the top ten school systems in the state with the lowest rate of energy use per student, according to a report released by the Tennessee Department of Education’s Energy Efficient Schools Initiative.

The report noted that Kingsport City Schools has reduced energy costs by an estimated 22% from 2003 to 2008. In 2003, Kingsport ranked 21st of 136 systems in the state for lowest energy use per student. The school system improved its ranking to 8th in the state in 2008.

The savings is especially notable as the school system has added several office facilities and expanded the Dobyns-Bennett High School campus with the opening of a new art wing, field house and an instrumental building in the same time frame.

The further reduction of energy costs was targeted as a major budget reduction initiative last year, according to KCS Director of Facilities David Carper. An example of this initiative includes the installation of a centralized energy management system that allows administrators to control building temperatures from one location.

Classrooms temperatures were adjusted from the normal operating set temperature of 72 degrees to a summer set point of 80 degrees. Temperatures in classrooms have been regulated to 72 degrees during the school day in the warmer months and 68 degrees in the winter months. When the school day is over, temperatures are adjusted to 80 degrees in the warmer months and 60 degrees in the winter months.

With the new centralized temperature control system, the school system realized an 11% decrease in energy usage in June and July of 2009 compared to the same time period in 2008 – a savings of more than $21,000 in two months. Carper said several school facilities saw a reduction in energy usage that ranged from 10 to 44% in June and July of 2009.

“We are very pleased with the results of this initiative. Not only is reducing energy usage and costs beneficial to our school operations and to city taxpayers, it is also the right thing to do in terms of raising awareness of energy use in our schools,” according to Kingsport City Schools Superintendent Dr. Richard Kitzmiller.

The school system hopes to realize additional energy savings with the installation of solar panels in the Dobyns-Bennett Career and Technical Center, along with the geothermal heating and cooling system operating at John Adams Elementary School.
