Free containers for needles, lancets now available at five Wellmont community hospitals

 

 

FREE CONTAINERS FOR NEEDLES, LANCETS NOW AVAILABLE

AT FIVE WELLMONT COMMUNITY HOSPITALS

 People with diabetes who regularly use needles or lancets for their medical care need to dispose of them safely.

For more than two years, the Diabetes Treatment Centers at Wellmont Health System have assisted the public by providing free, safe disposal containers at Wellmont hospitals in Bristol, Kingsport and Greeneville. Now, the program is expanding to the health system's hospitals in Hawkins and Hancock counties and Southwest Virginia – Hawkins County Memorial Hospital in Rogersville; Hancock County Hospital in Sneedville; Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va.; Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va.; and Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Norton, Va.

"These puncture-resistant containers will provide a valuable service to people in Southwest Virginia, Rogersville and Sneedville who don't have an opportunity to safely dispose of needles or lancets," said Jim Perkins, director of Wellmont's Diabetes Treatment Centers. "It will be safe for the people who use these items, their families and the community."

Residents who use needles to treat other medical conditions may also be able to use the nine-inch-tall containers.

People can go to the emergency department admissions desks at the hospitals in Virginia to pick up a container. Hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Containers can be picked up during the same days and hours at the front desks of Hawkins County Memorial Hospital and Hancock County Hospital.

When a container is full, it can be returned to the hospital and exchanged for a new one.

Containers are also available at the Diabetes Treatment Centers at Holston Valley Medical Center and Bristol Regional Medical Center and at the front desk of Takoma Regional Hospital in Greeneville.

Clinic helps patients understand, fight breast cancer

 

CLINIC HELPS PATIENTS UNDERSTAND, FIGHT BREAST CANCER

Kris Lucas knows what it's like to find cancer on a family tree and realize you might be next. But she also knows that when it comes to cancer, knowledge is power. And in that power, she believes she has found the freedom to change her future.

"It has made all the difference," said Lucas, who discovered two years ago that she carried a gene that greatly increased her risk for developing breast cancer. "For me, as long as I know I have a plan of action, I'm in a much better frame of mind. I know I am going to beat this and hopefully never have to face cancer."

Lucas' confidence and plan of action come courtesy of a relatively new field in oncology that specializes in cancer knowledge and prevention. At Kingsport Hematology Oncology's High Risk Cancer Clinic and under the guidance of Wendy Vogel, Lucas has been able to access the latest information, discuss her options and make informed decisions that can greatly reduce her cancer risk.

"It's a new field, prevention of cancer," said Vogel, who heads up the clinic. "There are proactive things we can do for our health. We look at ways to reduce the risk."

Patients generally come to a high-risk cancer clinic because of family history, exposure or previous cancer diagnosis, Vogel said. They can self-refer, or their doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant can refer them.

"First, we do a thorough health history," Vogel said. "Then we do a risk assessment. We look not only at family and medical history but also at lifestyle and environment."

In the end, patients are provided information that includes not only their cancer risks but also concrete practical ways to reduce that risk.

Recommendations can range from quitting smoking, exercising and eating healthy to taking medications (such as Tamoxifen for women at high risk for breast cancer) to prophylactic surgery.

Every person is different, Vogel said. And the goal of the clinic is not to make patients choose a particular course of action but to provide them with the information to make their own best choices.

In the end, it is very empowering, said Lucas, who meets with Vogel annually to stay up-to-date on the latest advances and continually evaluate her progress. In fact, Lucas credits Vogel's guidance in helping her stay in control after receiving the news that would change her life.

"My dad is a two-year breast cancer survivor," Lucas said. "He tested positive for the genetic mutation, BRCA2, which meant there was a 50 percent chance he had passed the gene to my sister and me."

Both Lucas and her sister chose to be tested as well, and both found they too were carriers of the gene.

"Not a lot of people understand the dynamics and what this really means. It's not a question of if you get breast cancer but when," Lucas said. "We also found out we were not only at a higher risk for breast cancer but also pancreatic, ovarian and skin cancer.

"It was a lot to absorb at the time."

With Vogel's help, however, Lucas found herself regaining hope.

"She said, 'OK, this is the gene you have, this is what it means, this is what is involved, and this is what is recommended. Let's form a plan of action. This is how we're going to tackle it.'

"It was wonderful to find somebody who knows what's going on – to say, 'This is what we're going to do to help you, and here are your options.' "

Because breast cancer can be estrogen driven, Lucas chose to undergo a prophylactic hysterectomy, including the ovaries, to reduce her risk. She has chosen not, at this time, to have prophylactic breast surgery but is holding it as an option for the future. And she diligently keeps up with all her medical screenings, from skin to gastrointestinal, to be on the alert for any future cancers.

More importantly, she feels in control of both her health and her life, no longer waiting in fear for a diagnosis of cancer but tackling the issue head on to delay, or prevent, its appearance.

"There are a lot of high-risk people out there who don't know it," Vogel said. "And there is a lot of false worry out there. We're here to accurately evaluate risk and provide a specific plan. And that gives our patients power."

 Holston Valley Medical Center and Bristol Regional Medical Center have long been leaders in quality heart care across the region and the state.

From Holston Valley's ranking as the No. 1 cardiology program in Tennessee by HealthGrades, the nation's leading independent healthcare ratings organization, to Bristol Regional's expertise in beating-heart bypass surgery, the two hospitals provide a high level of care for heart patients.

Now, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has recognized Holston Valley and Bristol Regional for the high-quality treatment they deliver by designating the hospitals Blue Distinction Centers for Cardiac Care. Holston Valley and Bristol Regional earned the designation after meeting objective selection criteria that show they offer specialty care for hearts.

Blue Distinction Centers offer a full range of services, such as inpatient heart care and cardiac rehabilitation, catheterization and surgery. The goal of the Blue Distinction program is to help patients consistently find quality specialty care and enable and encourage healthcare professionals to improve overall quality and delivery of care.

"We're gratified that BlueCross BlueShield has recognized the superior care our physicians and nurses deliver to our patients in need of heart care," Holston Valley President Blaine Douglas said. As an example, both Holston Valley and Bristol Regional consistently beat the 90-minute national standard for door-to-balloon time. That means physicians clear a patient's clogged artery and restore blood flow less than 90 minutes after the patient has arrived in the emergency department.

Both hospitals constantly work to reduce that time frame. In 2008, the Wellmont Foundation provided $500,000 to installed electrocardiogram monitors in many ambulances in the region. The foundation also donated devices that transmit EKGs to Holston Valley and Bristol Regional while a patient is en route. That enables a heart attack to be diagnosed before a patient arrives at the hospital.

In addition to designating Holston Valley as the No. 1 cardiology program in the state, HealthGrades ranked it among the state's top six hospitals for all cardiac services.

This exemplary ranking is typical of the high standing Holston Valley holds in cardiac care. The hospital hosted the region's first open-heart surgery in 1979 and was named in 2005 and 2007 by Thomson Reuters as one of the country's Top 100 heart hospitals.

Bristol Regional is a leader in the usage of beating-heart bypass surgery. That procedure enables a doctor to only stabilize the portion of the heart needing work while the rest continues to pump and circulate blood to the rest of the body.

This cutting-edge procedure means a patient does not have to be hooked to a heart-lung machine. That reduces the chance of possible side effects from that machine: short-term memory loss and trouble thinking clearly.

"Amateur Astronomy: Then & Now. Easier than Ever" with Mark Marquette

(free!): 3:30 p.m., Discovery Theater. See how far amateur astronomy has come

in the past forty years. Amazing technology has allowed us to easily find objects in

the sky or take photographs that would have been the envy of major observatories.

 

Evening Events: 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.

 

"Here Comes the Sun" with Paul Lewis (free!): 7 p.m. - 8 p.m., Amphitheater

(Planetarium if raining). See how our understanding of the sun has changed with

advancements in technology. Paul Lewis is the director of astronomy outreach at

the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a Solar System ambassador for NASA. A

must-see for the entire family!

 

Nighttime Viewing (free!): 8:30 p.m. - 10 p.m., Observatory. Spectacular views

of celestial delights await you. Savor the almost edge-on view of Saturn's rings, be

awe-struck by the distance to galaxies, and feel like you're flying low over the

moon with the Bays Mountain Astronomy Club's telescopes. These views and more

will be seen at our Observatory. A live presentation about what is up in the night

sky will take place in the Planetarium if the weather does not cooperate.

Bays Mountain Park Day Camp / Raptor Camp

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to let you know that we are taking applications for our summer day camp and raptor camp.  Day camps are available for Bays Mountain Park Association Members who have children or grandchildren entering grades 1-3 and 4-6. Raptor camp is available for members with children or grandchildren entering grades 7-12.  I have attached the membership application as well as the day camp and raptor camp registrations.  If you would like to participate in these camps, just fill out the forms, (you must have a family membership for day camp and an individual membership for raptor camp) and fax them to us at 224-2589, mail them to us at 853 Bays Mountain Park Road, Kpt. 37660, or pop them in the inter city mail and we'll process them as soon as possible. While crawling gallery to gallery in historic downtown Kingsport, through magnificent art and sampling fine local tastes, you will see Tom and Becky from Kingsport Theatre Guild enjoying themselves as the Month of Tomfoolery winds down. Wander up to the Ballet studio and appreciate the contemporary dance created for Kingsport's Big Read event by the Kingsport Ballet. Arts Crawl On April 29th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., visitors to the downtown Kingsport business district will be able to take a trip through the arts by picking up an Arts Crawl Passport under the State Theater Marquee, 157 Broad Street. The passport will include a list of, and directions to, the participating galleries and other venues.: BANQ, Cindy Saadeh Fine Art Studio, Ripper Arts Studio & Gallery, Downtown Kingsport Association Gallery, Kingsport Ballet, River Mountains Antiques, Style, Suzanne Barrett Justis Fine Art Studio and Gallery, The Gallery of Local Artists, and Up Against the Wall Gallery. In conjunction with this spring's Arts Crawl the Arts Council will be announcing the Arts Award recipients at BANQ at 8:30 p.m. Nominations will be accepted until March 22. Kingsport Ballet presents Tom Sawyer – A contemporary dance. Kingsport Ballet has created a new contemporary dance, inspired by the story of Tom Sawyer. The music is upbeat and playful, and the characters fully embrace the saucy nature of Tom and his friends. The piece illustrates a scene where the show-off boys encounter a group of proper girls and proceed to make themselves known to them. Tom Sawyer is set in the antebellum era in Mississippi, and the dance aims to embody this period of time while exploring contemporary ballet: old fashioned charm meets present day movement. The choreography is created by Erika Ballard. You will experience the Kingsport Ballet in various locations throughout the month.
