REGION'S LARGEST CARDIOVASCULAR PRACTICE

PARTNERS WITH WELLMONT HEALTH SYSTEM

 

KINGSPORT – An unprecedented partnership between the area's largest cardiovascular physicians' group and the region's top heart program will significantly enhance care for patients across Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

Cardiovascular Associates, with more than 30 specialists practicing in six area locations, is partnering with Wellmont Health System, which operates Tennessee's No. 1 cardiology hospital. The relationship was finalized earlier this month.

Under the agreement, CVA's physicians have become Wellmont employees and will provide clinical and administrative leadership for the cardiovascular programs at Wellmont hospitals.

"By fully integrating CVA's physicians and staff into our health system, we can maximize the quality and value we provide to our patients," said Bob Burgin, Wellmont's interim CEO. "This partnership is the natural evolution of a long-term relationship, and it will only serve to strengthen what is already the premier heart program in the region."

Cardiovascular Associates has managed the cardiac programs at Wellmont hospitals for several years as part of the Wellmont Regional Heartcare Network. During that time, Holston Valley Medical Center has twice been named one of the nation's Top 100 heart hospitals and, most recently, was ranked Tennessee's No. 1 hospital for cardiology by HealthGrades. Bristol Regional Medical Center has emerged as a regional leader in off-pump bypass surgery, and both hospitals consistently outperform the 90-minute national gold standard for door-to-balloon time for heart attack patients.

 Dr. Gerald Blackwell, Cardiovascular Associates' president and chairman of the board, said the new relationship will be virtually transparent to patients but will yield significant benefits. Through this formal partnership, CVA and Wellmont will be better able to proactively ensure that Tennessee's premier cardiovascular care network continues to optimally serve the region despite the pressure of healthcare reform.

"This integration strategy represents the cutting-edge model being embraced at leading cardiovascular institutions throughout the United States," Dr. Blackwell said. With the new industrial access road, it will become much easier to show the property. Currently, we are preparing both electronic and printed brochures for Partnership Park II and Gateway Commerce Park. We know we have Class "A" parks available for new companies, we just have to make sure everybody else knows!

Right Way Marketing Begins Operations Right Way Marketing cut the ribbon on its new facility April 24th. The 50-seat out-bound call center is located in the old Carolina Pottery shopping center. Timothy Hill, Right Way owner, indicated the location was selected to allow for future expansion of the business and to draw from an existing trained workforce.   Right Way was assisted in the move with a $10,000 loan from the Sullivan County Industrial Development Board. The loan will be forgiven if the business reaches a planned number of hires within a specified time. Such loans are provided to companies too small to qualify for state incentive programs.

Olive Garden Opens in Kingsport The new Olive Garden opened May 3rd in the East Stone Commons shopping center on Eastman Road. About 165 jobs will be created by the 246-seat, 7,441 square-foot restaurant.

Two Former Board Members Honored as 2010 Laureates The Tri-Cities TN/VA Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame honored Jerry L. Miller, M.D. and Keith Wilson as 2010 Laureates. The JA Hall of Fame event, to honor and celebrate the entrepreneurial success of these two leaders, will be held at MeadowView on May. 13th.   Dr. Jerry Miller is the President and Founder of the Holston Medical Group, P.C. and Keith Wilson is Publisher of the Kingsport Times News. Both formerly served as members of the NETWORKS' Board of Directors.

Sumner County Delegation Visits Sullivan County As part the Governor's Three Star Program, Sullivan County hosted a delegation from Sumner County, April 22 and 23. The group was provided tours of Bristol Motor Speedway, downtown Bristol, downtown Kingsport and the Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing. The purpose of the visit is to allow communities to share their experiences in implementing various community improvement programs. A visit to Sumner County by a delegation from Sullivan County is planned for Summer 2010. (Thanks to the City of Kingsport for the use of a tour bus.)

Bristol Welcomes Royal Mouldings' New Plant Manager A reception to welcome Royal Mouldings' new plant manager was held at the facility April 29th. The new manager, Mark Leszczynski was the former manager of Royal Window and Door Profiles in Reno, Nevada.   Bristol Mayor Fred Testa, along with several local and state officials, welcomed Mr. Leszcznski and his family to the community. Tours of the 405,000 square-foot facility followed. The Bristol plant, which currently employs 101, manufactures products made of Cellular Vinyl which offer the look and feel of wood. Currently, the Bristol facility is producing plantation shutter components, trim board, rigid vinyl PVC window components and exterior trim mouldings.

County Commissioner Recognized for Historic Preservation Efforts County Commissioner Dennis Houser was recognized as "Volunteer of the Year" at the Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association's Pinnacle Awards Luncheon on May 5th. The Award recognized Houser for his many years of dedication to save the Derry Inn, the restoration of historic Blountville and efforts to promote historic preservation and tourism development in Sullivan County.

NETWORKS Thanks Intern NETWORKS would like to express sincere thanks to our departing intern, Jeffery Champlin. Jeffery graduated East Tennessee State University on May 8th with a master's degree in public administration. Immediately upon graduation Jeffery and wife Michelle will move to Huntington Beach, California where he will be employed by the American Cancer Society of Orange and Santa Ana Counties.   While with NETWORKS, Jeffery updated the Sullivan County Industrial Directory, Annual Housing Starts and Community Profiles. He also prepared an Industrial Support & Services Directory and assisted King College with a survey of the skill needs of local employers.

Wellmont provides relief supplies to Middle Tennessee

 

 

WELLMONT PROVIDES RELIEF SUPPLIES TO MIDDLE TENNESSEE

 

KINGSPORT – Touched by the devastation from the storms that hit the Nashville area, Wellmont Health System has provided relief supplies.

At the request of state Rep. Tony Shipley, R-Kingsport, Wellmont provided a load of personal hygiene items to Middle Tennessee. The items were razors, shave cream, baby shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bandages, mouthwash, baby lotion and hand sanitizer.

"Anyone who read or saw televised accounts of the damage in Nashville would be amazed at the devastation that region suffered," said Bob Burgin, Wellmont's interim CEO. "As a health system, we understand some of the most things people need at a time like this are basic sanitary items. We are pleased we can help our fellow Tennesseans."

The items were provided to Shipley, who planned to distribute them in two groups. The first went to 70-100 people in the Carthage area district of state Rep. Terri Lynn Weaver. Today, he planned to provide the remaining supplies to Rep. Phillip Johnson, who represents Cheatham County and parts of Montgomery and Williamson counties

Shipley said personal hygiene items were in short supply, meaning Wellmont's donation met an important need. He complimented Wellmont for its actions.

"I'm really touched," Shipley said. "One call, and they filled my car. Wellmont absolutely did a great thing and stepped up to the plate. I'm very appreciative."

Second Annual AmazinGrace 5K to Benefit Providence Medical Clinic,

Opening This Summer in Downtown Kingsport


First Baptist Church of Kingsport invites individuals and families of all ages to participate in the second annual AmazinGrace 5K, to benefit Providence Medical Clinic, a free medical clinic that will open its doors to the community this summer. The 5K event, building on the success of its inaugural run last year, will be held Sunday, May 23, in downtown Kingsport, and will also include a Kids Festival of Miles, a free One Mile Fun Run/Walk, and Family Fun Activities – inflatables for the kids, Christian music, health information, food concessions, and fellowship.


The event will take place across from First Baptist Church Kingsport, at the intersection of Clay and Sullivan Streets. The 5K feature event (chip timed) will begin at 7:00 pm, the free One Mile Fun Run/Walk will begin at 6:30 pm, the Kids Festival of Miles (chip timed) will begin at 6:15 pm, and the Family Fun Activities will be held from 5:30 – 8:00 pm. Awards for the 5K race will be presented immediately following the race.


Pre-registration is now open for the 5K main event, which features a certified, flat, fast downtown course. The fee is $15 through May 17 and $20 after May 17. Late Registration/Packet Pick-up for the race will be held Saturday, May 22, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at Fleet Feet Sports, 1880 North Eastman Road, Kingsport, and Sunday, May 23, from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm at First Baptist Church Kingsport.


Pre-registration is also now open for the Kids Festival of Miles ($10) and for the One Mile Fun Fun/Walk, which is free to all participants. Registration is required for all race events.


Entry forms for all races are available at www.fbckpt.org and www.fbcamazingrace5K.blogspot.com. The course route can be viewed online. Entry forms are also available in the church office at 200 West Church Circle, Kingsport.


One hundred percent of all race proceeds will go to support Providence Medical Clinic, a new free clinic that will begin serving the community this summer. Providence Medical Clinic will offer free medical care to residents of Sullivan County with limited financial resources.

Food City Donates Over $2,400 to the Scholarship Fund

 

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Throughout the 2009 holiday season, area Food City supermarkets once again featured the sale of a special children's book, entitled The Santa Train Tradition. 

 

Inspired by one of our region's most anticipated and exciting holiday traditions, the well-crafted children's book was written by long time Kingsport resident, Leigh Anne W. Hoover and is beautifully illustrated by Carol Bates Murray of Marion, Va. 

 

The popular book made its debut during the 2008 Christmas season in Food City locations along the 110-mile route. In 2009, the book was reprinted with a new green cover and again offered for sale at a retail of $11.99 in area Food City locations.  The original red cover is now a limited edition.

 

The Santa Train Tradition tells the story of seven-year-old Ben Massey and his annual family tradition of walking to meet the Santa Train on the chilly Saturday morning before Thanksgiving.

 

"Just as the Santa Train gives back to our region, Food City's generosity has fulfilled my wish by enabling this children's book to also serve as an instrument of giving," said Hoover. "It is my hope that the Santa Train Scholarship will continue to benefit, and The Santa Train Tradition will become a treasured holiday keepsake for many families."

 

Yesterday, Food City presented a check for the proceeds, which totaled $2,448.81 to representatives of the Kingsport Chamber Foundation to benefit the Santa Train Scholarship. 

 

The check presentation took place at the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce during the monthly Board of Directors meeting.

 

The combined two-year total donation to the Santa Train Scholarship from the sale of the book is $9,801.22.

 

"The Santa Train Tradition is a great children's book and benefits a wonderful cause.  Food City is thrilled to participate in this promotion for a second year," said Steven C. Smith, Food City President/CEO.

 

"Once again, Food City has shown that they are a company that is truly committed to the communities they serve," Kingsport Chamber chair and Domtar vice president and mill manager, Charlie Floyd said. "In the past two years, Food City has graciously donated $9,800 to the Santa Train Scholarship to ensure students the opportunity of a higher education. We are very appreciative to our partners, Food City and CSX Transportation for their tremendous support in this effort."

 

Each year a high school senior along the 110-mile route of the Santa Train is awarded a $5,000, four year college scholarship.

 

Originating in 1943, the Santa Train has been winding its way through the mountains of Appalachia for more than 68 years. The tradition started as a way to show appreciation to residents of Southwest Virginia and Eastern Kentucky for shopping in Kingsport.

 

The Santa Train is an annual project sponsored by CSX Transportation, Food City and the Kingsport Tennessee Area Chamber of Commerce. It delivers more than 15 tons of donated gifts, toys, clothing and candies along the train's 110-mile route from Shelby, Ky., to Kingsport.

Small Business loan application Clinic - Live - May 19th, 6-9 PM

KINGSPORT CHAMBER AND KOSBE HOSTING A LIVE SBA LOAN APPLICATION CLINIC

KINGSPORT, TN —May 4, 2010—The Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce Office of Small Business Development & Entrepreneurship (KOSBE), in partnership with several small business economic development lenders, is hosting a live loan application clinic highlighting SBA's Community Express and Patriot Express Loan Programs, the State of Tennessee's ECD-BERO Rural Microloan, and other innovative financing options to grow small businesses. The event takes place from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, on May 19^th, at the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce, 151 E Main St, Kingsport, TN.  The workshop is offered free of cost, but registration is required.

During the clinic, business owners and entrepreneurs will complete their own loan application on site, and submit it for immediate consideration (if desired) at the end of the event. Applicants must provide a copy of their valid driver's license and have a business checking account established in the name of their business.  Sue Malone, Strategies for Small Business (Danville, CA)—the #1 SBA loan provider for the Community Express Loan Program in the nation—will facilitate the loan application process.  She has closed over 20,000 SBA Community Express Loans for small business owners. 

The SBA Community Express Loan is an easy way for small businesses and startups to establish business credit.  It requires no collateral, and no tax returns or financial statements.  The SBA Community Express Loan features a 10-year term for low monthly payments, and electronic funding directly into a business checking account, so borrowers do not have to wait for a paper check. The maximum loan amount is $25,000.

The ECD-BERO Rural Micro Loan Fund is designed to encourage job creation and provide access to capital to existing and potential entrepreneurs to support their growth and expansion. Micro loan funds of $500-$10,000 are available for use by entrepreneurs living and operating a business in rural Tennessee. A micro-enterprise is defined as a for-profit entity with five or fewer employees, one of whom owns the business. Fixed assets and working capital loans are accepted, and the maximum loan amount is $10,000. Technical assistance and training are required for the duration of the loan.

The Patriot Express Loan is a streamlined loan product with an enhanced guaranty and interest rate that is available to military community members including veterans, service-disabled veterans, active-duty service members participating in the military's Transition Assistance Program, Reservists and National Guard members, current spouses of any of the above, and the widowed spouse of a service member or veteran who died during service, or of a service-connected disability.  The Patriot Express features one of SBA's fastest turnaround times for loan approvals. Loans are available up to $500,000 and qualify for SBA's maximum guaranty of up to 90 percent.  The Patriot Express can be used for most business purposes, including start-up, expansion, equipment purchases, working capital, inventory or business-occupied real-estate purchases.

According to Aundrea Wilcox, KOSBE Executive Director, "These loan programs offer small business owners and startups fast and simple access to working capital from a trusted secondary source—in the event they are unable to get financing from their local community bank, or need additional funding.  If you know that you have bad credit, you should take corrective action now to fix any problems before you apply.  More than ever, borrowers must show creditworthiness and the ability to repay a loan."

Kingsport's Actors with Kingsport Theatre Guild  will be performing four well known adult One Act productions  the weekend of June 18 through June 20.

Director's Daniel Wallen, Chris Murray, Stan Sanders and Tina Radtke have all been involved with many aspects of regional theatre in some form or another. The  efforts of this team of directors will produce four well known One Acts with four seasoned local casts for KTG's summer stage. With the purchase of a ticket you may attend any and all combination of the four One Acts. Come and go as you please.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, by Christopher Sergel and directed by Tina Radtke, will teach you that the most important thing is about what YOU do. The intense  story line is sure to make you think.

Take Five, by Westley Pederson. If this story were true it would be director Chris Murray's worst nightmare. This comedic view of community theatre is full of surprises. Sit back and be entertained.

What Women Want Most by Thomas J. Hatton is directed by Stan Sanders. As artistic director, Stan leads this group of community actors in how to be Knights, Nobel Maidens and Kings with a funny surprising twist.

Daniel Wallen directs Wanda's Visit. "With the help of Mr. Durang, the fine art of parody has returned to theater in a production you can sink teeth and mind into, while also laughing like an idiot." —NY Times.

Traffic Signal to be removed at Clinchfield and Cherokee Village

Kingsport Traffic Division to remove signal at Clinchfield and Cherokee Village

KINGSPORT -- Kingsport's traffic division is in the process of removing the red light at Clinchfield Street and Cherokee Village (formerly Ravine Road). The signal is currently on flash and signage denoting the signal is under study for removal, a decision in part now permissible due to a changing traffic pattern with the recent completion of a portion of the new road network around the hospital. Target date for permanent removal is June 26th.

Please pass this on to all other businesses in downtown Kingsport !!   When: Saturday May 22nd  from 9am to 1pm (If you can’t help on this day, pick a day in the week leading up to the cleanup to participate. All trash bags will be picked up on Saturday from the sidewalks.   Where: Downtown Kingsport (We will meet at the corner of Market and Broad)   What: Sweeping, weeding, picking up trash, cleaning the graffiti that has appeared on our buildings, clearing out alley ways, cleaning windows, planting flowers or other plants to beautify our sidewalks, sprucing up your façade,  and whatever else we can think of to make Downtown more beautiful.   Who: We need all Downtown businesses and merchants to participate. We also need you to involve your churches and youth groups, any civic clubs to which you belong, girl and boy scouts, environmental groups, ROTC, etc….   Why: Over 150,000 people will be visiting our Downtown over the summer to enjoy our wonderful merchants and restaurants and Racks by the Tracks, to the Twilight Alive concert Series, Bluegrass on Broad, the Arts Crawl, Fourth of July Parade and fireworks, Fun Fest Events, Mardi Gras,  Evening with the Arts, Rail Grass, and the list goes on. Let us show them all that Downtown Kingsport has to offer.     Please let us know … 1.     The areas you see that need special attention. 2.     If you can pitch in to help provide food and drink, before or after the event.
