State officials to be in Colonial Heights, North Kingsport and Fall Creek to verify special census

KINGSPORT - As part of the special census process just completed by the City of Kingsport, state officials from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development will be going door-to-door in Kingsport beginning Wednesday, May 2, 2012 to conduct a sample verification of the recently completed Kingsport special census. According to ECD Special Projects Director Stanley Harrison, his team will be in clearly marked state vehicles bearing a state seal and green government-issue license tags. The special census verification team will be sampling the results of Kingsport's special census for recently annexed areas in Colonial Heights, North Kingsport and Fall Creek.

Mayor's Prayer Breakfast slated for Thursday at MeadowView

KINGSPORT -- Kingsport Mayor Dennis Phillips is hosting the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, May 3rd at Meadowview Marriott Conference Resort and Convention Center in conjunction with the nation's 61st observance of the National Day of Prayer.  The program will feature community led prayers for guidance and support of different aspects of the community. In addition, the program will feature music from Paul Williams and the Victory Trio, a Dove Award nominated bluegrass gospel group.

"This breakfast is a time where our city can be strengthened and refreshed as we face the challenges that present us in today's world," said Mayor Dennis Phillips.

The breakfast buffet serving line will begin at 6:45 am with music beginning at 7:00 am and the program starting at 7:20 am. Paul Williams and the Victory Trio will then perform after the prayer program until 9 a.m. 

Tickets are $11.00 each in advance and may be picked up at City Hall (225 West Center Street), the Parks and Recreation office at the Civic Auditorium (1550 Fort Henry Drive), or the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce.  A limited number of tickets will be available the day of the event.

The public is invited to meet the 10 sculptors selected for the 6th annual Sculpture Walk exhibit in Downtown Kingsport. 'Everbetter', a rock cover band, will be performing on Market Street and local artists will be showcased in live demonstrations throughout the block. Many downtown merchants and restaurants will join in the celebration with special operating hours for the first Thursday of May. Saturday, May 5th will begin with the Sculpture Walk 'talk and tour' at 10am led by curator Peggy Townsend. This 'walk and talk' lecture is free and open to the public. It will begin at Glenn Bruce Park on Broad Street near the Library. Peggy Townsend, public art director from Chattanooga will lead the group and introduce the 10 selected artists and their art. Then from 11am-4pm, the ART MARKET will be open with booths set up on Market Street. Astronomy Day Activities Announced

 

On Saturday, April 28, 2012, from noon until 10:00 p.m., Bays Mountain Park and the Bays Mountain Astronomy Club will celebrate the International Day of Astronomy with free presentations, displays and activities for the entire public. Rain or shine, visitors can spend an exciting and informative day at Bays Mountain Park where they can learn about the science and hobby of astronomy. All non-planetarium astronomy-related activities are free and are perfect fun for the entire family! Weather permitting, the club will also be hosting daytime viewing of the sun and nighttime viewing of Mars, Venus, and much more!

 

In the afternoon, from noon until 4:30 p.m., there will be displays and presentations in the Nature Center’s Discovery Theater. Talks will feature ways to safely observe the upcoming transit of the planet Venus and how to explore the night sky using the Big Dipper. An extended session of our SunWatch program will occur from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Bays Mountain Observatories. Visitors will be able to safely observe sunspots and other features of the Sun through our telescopes (weather permitting.)

The evening’s activities will begin at 7:00 p.m. with an exciting program about the Sun-Earth relationship that we call "space weather." Paul Lewis, Director of UT Knoxville’s Space Science Outreach and Solar System Ambassador for NASA, is our featured speaker and will present an entertaining program entitled "The Sun, The Earth And The Space Between". Following his presentation, spectacular views of celestial delights await you at our StarWatch program starting at dusk. Savor a wonderful view of crescent-shaped Venus, be awe-struck by the distance to galaxies, and feel like you’re flying low over the moon.  These views and more will be seen with the Bays Mountain Astronomy Club’s telescopes at our Observatory.  A live presentation about what is up in the night sky will take place in the Planetarium if the weather does not cooperate.

Thrill at viewing different layers of the sun up close and in great detail.  Safely see sunspots and prominences.  Weather dependent.

“Ways to View the Sun Safely” with Bob Smith (free!):  2:30 p.m.,

Observatory Grounds (Discovery Theater if raining). 

The Sun is the closest star to Earth. Learn how to safely observe this extremely bright and fascinating wonder of the daytime sky.

“Explore the Night Sky Using the Big Dipper” with John Hay (free!):  3:30 p.m., Discovery Theater. 

The Big Dipper is something most of us can locate in the night sky. Learn to use this familiar asterism to find other stars and constellations.

 

Evening Events:  7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Kingsport, TN – Kingsport Ballet sets the date for a spring fundraiser, Ballet and Bubbly, at the beautiful Chateau Selah, on April 28^th, 6-9pm.  The event celebrates director, Valeria Sinyavskaya’s 10^th anniversary with the company.  The bash will feature local musicians, a dance company performance in open air, and delicious food, wine and champagne, provided by regional vendors and growers. The chateau, built on a sprawling hilltop with stunning views of the Tennessee countryside, is the perfect blend of updated, casual style and classic elegance, befitting the Ballet’s history and impact in the community.

Proceeds from the event and its silent auction will benefit Kingsport Ballet special outreach programs, such as DANCE CO and Move 1 and 2*which provide free dance and fitness instruction, as well as nutrition and health education to children. “Being able to provide these enriching services to our area youth through our talented instructors, sets Kingsport Ballet apart as more than a quality arts provider,” states president, Mary Schnede.  “ It makes us a valuable asset to the community and integral to the growth and appeal of our area.”

Artistic director Valeria Sinyavskaya was a Prima Ballerina with the Novosibirsk Ballet Theatre and Opera for many years, where she performed all the principal roles, guested with the Bolshoi Ballet and other companies, and toured all over Europe and the Middle East. Ms Sinyavskaya was a pupil of Galina Berezova, who was a prized pupil of Agrippina Vaganova herself, the founder of the world-renowned Russian method of ballet technique. Ms Sinyavskaya was recruited from Tokyo, Japan in 2001, where she was director of the International Ballet School. She began her tenure with Kingsport Ballet in January of 2002, and staged The Sleeping Beauty in March of the same year.

Did you know the City of Kingsport has a special hotline for code enforcement?  It’s 224-CODE or 224-2633.  You can call that number anytime and report a situation you suspect might be a code violation.  Whether it’s an unmowed yard, a longstanding pile of trash, a zoning issue, or you feel a house in your neighborhood is getting rundown beyond repair, feel free to let us know.

 

If you prefer to use the internet, go to the city’s website www.KingsportTN.gov and look for “I want to”, then “report”, then “a code violation”.

 

Many times you just don’t know who to call. This centralized number allows a staff member to determine the appropriate department so you don’t have experience the frustration of trying to find out yourself.

 

We can’t be everywhere all the time, so we need the eyes and ears of the entire community to help make Kingsport a great community to live, work and play.

·         Most areas in the City of Kingsport, Preston Forest, Preston Woods, Colonial Heights, Sullivan Gardens, Fall Creek, Indian Springs and Crown Colony fall within House District 2.

 

·         Some of the northern and northwestern parts of Kingsport are included in House District 1, which is predominantly in the City of Bristol (including Rivermont, Hiara Heights, West View, Lynn Garden, Bloomingdale, and Orebank).

 

·         House District 3 includes the Airport, Boone Lake, Bluff City, Blountville, and Piney Flats in Sullivan County along with all of Johnson County (Mountain City) and parts of Carter County (Hampton, Roan Mountain).

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – On Saturday, April 21, local author, Aundrea Wilcox, will have a local book preview and signing from 1 – 3 p.m. located at The Acoustic Coffeehouse, 415 West Walnut Street, Johnson City.

Her first book, Startup Savvy: Strategies for Optimizing Small Business Survival and Success, was published last May. The book is filled with professional advice and tips especially for potential entrepreneurs and any business in business less than five years.

Deadline Approaching for Kingsport City Schools Zoning And Tuition Applications for 2012-2013 School year

 

KINGSPORT – Kingsport City Schools will accept zoning and tuition applications for students in grades K-12 for the 2012-2013 school year through April 29, 2012.

 

Parents who would like to request their child attend a different city school outside the school zone their student is expected to attend must apply for a zoning exception. Parents of students who are not legal residents of the city of Kingsport must submit a tuition application to attend a Kingsport City school. Parents or legal guardians must apply annually for their child's tuition and zoning status, even if they attended a Kingsport City school in 2011-2012.

 

Applications are available online at the Kingsport City Schools' website at www.k12k.com. Paper copies are also available at Kingsport City School's administrative office at 400 Clinchfield Street, Suite 200.

 

The following are excerpts from the Kingsport Board of Education's policies and procedures for zoning and tuition:

• Parents or legal guardians must apply annually for their child's tuition and zoning status.
• Students who are not legal residents of the city of Kingsport shall pay tuition charges as approved annually by the Board of Education. Failure to pay tuition will disqualify a student's application for the next year.
• Tuition students are accepted and zoning exceptions are granted only if current enrollment permits.
• The system does not provide bus transportation to either tuition or zoning-exemption students, except in specific circumstances.

 

Criteria for zoning exceptions are as follows:

1. Documented medical reasons;
2. Child care availability;
3. An expected move to a different zone;
4. Specialized school programs;
5. A fifth- or an eighth- grade student with a previous zoning exception;
6. A student whose family has moved to a different zone after November 1;
7. Documented justifications related to the child's specific educational experience.

 

The school system utilizes the following order when placing students:

1. Zoning exception reapplications;
2. Tuition reapplications for school employees working at the requested school;
3. New zoning exceptions applications;
4. Tuition reapplications;
5. New tuition applications for school employees working at the requested school;
6. New tuition applications for system and city employees;
7. New tuition applications for out-of-district residents.

Bob Feagins honored with Rod Irvin Excellence in Public Relations Award

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Your Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce brought home four Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Awards and one Rod Irvin Excellence in Public Relations Award at the 2012 Tri-Cities PRSA Awards of Excellence Banquet held Tuesday night at Eastman Lodge near Bays Mountain Park, Kingsport.

Celebrating the chapter's tenth anniversary year, the chapter recognized the four founding fathers with a surprise birthday celebration and Happy Birthday sing a-long. The founders include, Representative Jon Lundberg, president and CEO, The Corporate Image; Bob Feagins, executive director of communications and development, Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce; Mary Ellen Miller, president and CEO, MarketingMel and Dr. John King, public relations professor at East Tennessee State University.

The banquet recognized excellence in public relations work in our region. The chapter divides the entries into two categories, Honoring the Product and Honoring the Program; paralleling PRSA's Silver and Bronze Anvil competitions.

A panel of judges made up of PRSA members from the California Inland Empire PRSA Chapter evaluated the entries. There are three awards, Award of Excellence, Award of Quality and the Award of Merit.

Your Kingsport Chamber received the five following awards: Award of Excellence in the Non-profit website category for KOSBE.org; Award of Excellence in the Public Service category for the 69^th Annual Santa Train; Award of Excellence in the Special Events and Observances (Seven Days or Less) for the Kingsport Chamber 64th Annual Dinner and an Award of Quality in the Special Events and Observances (Seven Days or Less) for the 17^th Annual KOSBE Awards.

The 2012 recipient of the Rod Irvin Excellence in Public Relations Award was awarded to Bob Feagins, the fifth and final award of the night.

 

This award is designed to honor an individual who exemplifies integrity, creativity, leadership, community involvement and whose work has upheld the finest standards of the PRSA. Feagins was nominated by Gary Tucker, senior vice president of government and business relations, Eastman Credit Union and Betty Payne, director of corporate communications, Eastman Chemical Company.

 

"I had the privilege of working with Rod Irvin, the public relations professional for whom this award is named. I have neither doubt nor hesitation in putting Bob Feagins in that same category," said Payne. "Bob knows the importance of striking a good solid balance in public relations. Each day, he works to promote business and commerce throughout the Kingsport area. Whether he's working with a small family-operated start-up business or a Fortune 500 global corporation, Bob applies the same principles and attention to detail that shows either company that he is their champion."

 

One of Feagins' most notable accomplishments is the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce's Annual Dinner. What was once a dinner meeting with a couple of speeches and the obligatory 'passing of the gavel,' under his direction has become what many call the 'Tri-Cities' social event of the year.

 

Kingsport Chamber President and CEO, Miles Burdine said, "It is a pleasure to work with Bob Feagins. Bob continues to grow in his responsibilities and value to our community. He is an outstanding individual contributor. Bob is caring and supportive and has the skills to coach, develop and manage the work of others, overseeing staff members who are responsible for Member Relations, Keep Kingsport Beautiful and Move to Kingsport."

 

Feagins is a servant-leader. He takes great pride in his work as a community volunteer. He has a 'big heart' and a huge capacity for serving in the community through church, universities and technology centers, the arts, young professional organizations and through a host of non-profit organizations.

 

"I personally admire the outstanding career and personal accomplishments of Bob Feagins." said Olan Jones, president and CEO of Eastman Credit Union and recent Kingsport Chamber Board of Directors Chair. "He is effective and efficient at managing the business community's resources entrusted to the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce."

 

"Bob is a relationship-builder. He is a likeable person. Feagins is someone who is genuine in his dealings with others. He is humble and exhibits unquestionable integrity.  He enhances the reputation of the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce," continued Jones.

 

A native of Kingsport, Feagins graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School and holds a B.A. in communications from Emory & Henry College, Emory, Va., and a master's in communications from the University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla.

 

Prior to his work with the Kingsport Chamber, he served as client services director for The Corporate Image.

 

Feagins is the recipient of the 2012 Milligan College Leaders in Christian Service Honor Award; winner of numerous Public Relations Society of America Awards of Excellence and Quality; winner of Tri-Cities Addy Awards; winner of American Chamber of Commerce Executives Awards of Communications Excellence for Total Communications Program and other communications initiatives; recipient of The Business Journal's Tri-Cities TN/VA "Forty Under 40" Rising Young Business Stars Award; recipient of a Charter Media Broadcast Award for "Kingsport ChamberZone"; a Leadership Kingsport graduate; graduate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organizational Management (IOM); and selected to attend the inaugural session of the Generation Tennessee Young Business Leaders Conference.

 

Feagins also teaches an annual class on communications, public relations and development to Chamber of Commerce Executives from across the State of Tennessee at Middle Tennessee State University. Speaks to classes at Emory & Henry College, ETSU, Carson-Newman College and Northeast State on communications as well as a number of civic clubs and organizations in the Tri-Cities TN/VA region.

 

Feagins and his wife, Laura are both active members of Mafair United Methodist Church and reside in Kingsport.

 

In total, there were 54 entries submitted to the chapter for 2012 with 47 winners and one recipient of the Rod Irvin Excellence in Public Relations Award.

All program and product award categories are open to members and non-members who reside in the greater Tri-Cities area. This year, all work entered must have been released, published or performed, at least, in substantial part between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of 2011.
