Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion

Part of the NEW Skyflight Concert Series at the Renaissance Theatre

December 7, 2013 7:30 pm Renaissance Theatre

Skyflight Productions presents an evening with Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion at The Renaissance Theatre in Kingsport, TN on Saturday December 7, 2013. Nearly a decade after folk-rock duo Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion put out their first album together; the husband-and-wife pair feel like they've finally hit their stride on Wassaic Way, a collection of 11 new songs to be released August 6th on Rte 8 Records.

Produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Patrick Sansone at the Loft in Chicago, Wassaic Way finds Guthrie and Irion pushing further beyond the folky sound they established on 2005's Exploration, their first studio LP. After Irion's solo album Ex Tempore in 2007, the live album Folksong in 2009 and the children's collection Go Waggaloo in 2009, the pair began expanding their sonic horizons on 2011's Bright Examples, an album that drew praise from American Songwriter magazine for its "lush, dreamy sound."

"This record is a departure from a folk duo," Irion says. "I think this is the best example we've been able to present that shows the many facets of what we can do. There's loud guitars, there's soundscapes, there's a lushness to it, there's a popness, an edge. But that can be difficult sometimes to bring it all together and present it."

About Skyflight Productions & Toby Weisend

Kingsport will be host to national talent via Skyflight Productions. Former Ohio resident and president of Skyflight Productions, Toby Weisend, has focused his attention in adding a new cultural element to Kingsport, Tennessee. Over the last three years Weisend has welcomed artists of all genres, including several Grammy-nominated artists, to rural eastern Ohio from literally all over the globe including France, Canada and Australia. The concerts have been very successful, enhancing and enriching the small community of Barnesville, Ohio. Channeling his ideas, visions and goals into a small town setting certainly goes against the grain of most entrepreneurial promoters. Rather than competing for a reputable presence in an overcrowded metropolitan "scene", Weisend firmly believes that a small community can support and prosper from cultural expression. "Many artistic/creative individuals in a small town have not had the opportunity or resources to experience the nourishment from some of the nation's underappreciated musicians willing to share their creations." Weisend believes that his project will survive from word of mouth, lack of competition and stellar performances. "Every show I produce, I put my reputation on the line." He supports community efforts and energy and believes that this is the forum to make a community thrive. If the concert series is supported and well-attended, Weisend will expand his quest with a summer mini-festival, potentially acquiring larger-scale talent. There will be no boundaries in genre selection; national talent will be of utmost importance.  An incredible line up is set for Kingsport all the way through the summer of 2014 and beyond. This will be unlike any musical series Kingsport has ever had.  Get Engaged!

Dec 12: Grammy Nominated Composer and Musician Jonn Serrie in Concert at Bays Mountain Park

Bays Mountain Park is pleased to announce a one night holiday musical engagement with Grammy nominated and internationally renowned composer and musician Jonn Serrie on Thursday, December 12, 2013, at Bays Mountain Park's Planetarium.

This very special engagement titled "Upon a Midnight Clear" blends Serrie's unique holiday sounds with the wonders of the night sky as presented by Bays Mountain Park's very own astronomy department.

"Upon A Midnight Clear" combines the lush, romantic and ethereal sound of Jonn Serrie with the melodies of the season.  Warm, peaceful and sensual tones take the holidays to the far reaches of space.

Jonn Serrie is a diverse instrumentalist best known internationally as the preeminent composer of space music.  "Serrie evokes timeless feelings, anchors us in the familiar, and gives himself plenty of room to play with new sonorities" raves Keyboard magazine.  Jonn Serrie, perhaps better than anyone else, can take a listener to other worlds.  "Upon A Midnight Clear" is guaranteed to be unlike any seasonal program viewers have experienced.

Two special performances in the planetarium theater are offered, with the first beginning at 7:00 p.m. and the last at 9:00 p.m.  Tickets are $20.00 each for the general public, or $15.00 each for current Bays Mountain Park Association Members.  Special discounted group pricing is offered for this event.  Four or more tickets purchased in the same transaction will lower prices to $16.00 per ticket for the general public and $12.00 for Bays Mountain Park Association Members, respectively.  All seating is general admission.  Sorry, no seat reservations will be taken.  Tickets can be purchased at Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium in the Nature Center Gift Shop Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m.  They may also be purchased via phone by calling Bays Mountain Park at 423-229-9447.  Seating is limited to only 102 seats per show (full planetarium seating capacity).

Along with his extensive portfolio of recordings which includes a Grammy Nomination, Serrie's list of achievements and contributions is both diverse and esteemed. He was commissioned to compose the music for the world's first interactive planetarium production with Star Wars creator George Lucas and the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. His music has been heard in literally hundreds of theatres worldwide including England, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Japan, China, Canada, South America, Australia and many others. He composed the score for "Galaxies Across Space And Time", an IMAX and Space Telescope Science Institute feature film about the discovery of Deep Field galaxies beyond the known universe. The film won first place in the Large Format Film Festival in Los Angeles. Jonn's music is also featured in the new planetarium theatre on the Queen Mary 2, the world's most advanced luxury cruise ship in the world.

His music is used in World's Fair exhibits around the globe, including the Futures Pavilion in Seville that won first place for the best science exhibit. Jonn contributed music to PBS ("John Glenn; an American Hero"), the Discovery Channel ("Wings" series), the Weather Channel, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, custom music for aviation's top female aerobatic champion Patty Wagstaff, music for legendary pilot Pat Epps and a unique presentation of educational narrative and live music with famed NASA astronaut Story Musgrave called "Space Stories". Jonn is an FAA licensed pilot with advanced instrument and commercial ratings and flies for the U.S. Air Force Auxillary as a search and rescue mission pilot.

He has composed music for the hit Hollywood film "What The Bleep Do We Know?" starring Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin and for Academy Award winner David Carradine's Tai Chi series.

Jonn was chosen to compose the music for  Cirque De La Symphonia's new corporate show, "Cirque Universe" which features an interactive and live electronic music performance.

Jonn performed at the anniversary celebration of Apollo 11 televised worldwide from Cape Canaveral, as well as premier performances at the Ansari X-Prize and International Space Development Consortium events in St. Louis and Washington, DC. He has performed before world leaders at the Carter Center in Atlanta and major corporate, astronomy and New Thought events around the country. Jonn also sponsors the Galaxy Music Scholarship, a $1,000 prize awarded to graduating high school music students. Jonn's music is utilized in the medical community for sleep research, hospice spiritual care and music therapy programs for autistic children.

The music of Jonn Serrie embraces the expansiveness of space with the intelligent use of melody. He has made space understandable and the soul accessible.

Annually, more than 150,000 visitors pass through Bays Mountain Park making it one of the State of Tennessee's Top 50 Most Visited Attractions, according to the State of Tennessee Department of Tourist Development.
